The Layman's Guide to Surviving Cancer: From Diagnosis Through Treatment and Beyond

Howard Bressler was diagnosed with Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia (“APL”) in August 2000. During his subsequent treatments, through his bouts with Stevens Johnson Syndrome and in the course of researching and writing his forthcoming book, Howard tapped into much of what he has learned from his experiences and here, he explains these issues in layman's terms and hopes this to be a place where you can come and gain some insight, discuss treatment options and your own issues in facing this disease.

I have to say, all of the articles are very interesting and promising for the future… Howard, isn’t APL a more rare form of leukemia? Can the treatments for CLL be used for APL as well? Just curious… Love this “sexual intimacy” article but I really hope to see more articles that address intimacy with cancers other than female ones. Sometimes it’s the illnesses that are not so obvious to the eye that can be most difficult to understand and explain to someone else. I am always told how terrific I look because my physical self is “normal” looking, but they have no idea how painful my ailment is or how uncomfortable I can feel in my own skin…. Great site, Howard!
Thanks Deb for your comments. I agree, sexual intimacy — and sexual, emotional connection — are huge issues for cancer patients, and in the laser-like focus on surviving the disease this issue often gets overlooked. I will try to include additional articles addressing this it in future installments.
APL is relatively rare as compared to other types of leukemia and, although it shares some similar traits with other leukemia, the treatment for each is pretty specialized. Thankfully, the protocol I was on was effective and has since become standard for APL. Looking forward to more successful treatments for all cancers. In healing,
Howard
